In spite of their best efforts, the IAM Cycling team did not come away with the victory at the GP de Denain, which was eventually won in a mass sprint by Arnaud Démare (FDJ).

With two crashes marring the final three kilometers, Matteo Pelucchi (15e) was unable to keep the position needed to make the best use of his strong sprint.

Rubens Bertogliati acted as the team’s directeur sportif for this race, which usually ends up as a sprinters’ fest.

Reviewing the day, Bertogliati could see positives in IAM Cycling’s work.

“Throughout the race, Matteo Pelucchi was telling us that his legs were feeling very good, so the team worked hard in conjunction with FDJ and Europcar to close the gap to an escape group.  The guys succeeded in bringing Matteo to the ideal position in the ultimate kilometers.  However, in the approach to the finale there were two crashes that forced our sprinter to slam on his breaks and lose essential positions; consequently he was unable to figure in a sprint that would have naturally been suited to him.”
