In his second year as a professional, Jonathan Fumeaux will kick off his season in the south of France.

The GP cycliste de La Marseillaise will open the year for the rider from Conthey, in the south-west of Switzerland, which will be a contrast to last year when he made his debut in the heat and wind always on offer at the Tour of Qatar.

Similarly to the seven teammates lining up with him on Sunday, Fumeaux has taken a great deal of care in preparing for his season opener.

“After the 2013 season, I took four or five weeks off, and then started training again in mid-November.  And since the weather was good, by the end of December I found that I had over 3000 kilometers on my odometer.  During our training camp in Mallorca, we increased the pace and ate up nearly 1200 kilometers in the space of eight days.  Unfortunately, I got sick just at the end of our stay and have had to work extra hard to find my pedal stroke again.  But I’ll be recovered and ready for the race.”

Having already arrived in the region on Monday, Fumeaux intends to show himself on the southern French region.

“I’ve never ridden this event, but the profile has a lot of hills, so it should be suited to my strengths, though my main goals come later in the season.”
