“The Flèche Wallonne is a beautiful one day race, but is very nervous.  It is a perfect way to prepare for the Tour of Romandie.”

Marcel Wyss is full of praise for the race that will mark his first appointment for the week in the Ardennes.

“I’ve already raced it twice.  In the past, I have arrived at the foot of the Mur d’Huy with the best riders, but on the climb up, I have always missed a little special something.  I am aware of what it takes.  You cannot go into the red immediately at the bottom of the climb.  You’ll feel your mistake almost at once because the highest percentages come quickly.  You can’t burn all your matches at once.”

Having returned from a 90 minute ride in the company of Rémi Cusin and Sébastien Reichenbach, Marcel Wyss is upbeat.  He is enthusiastic about his IAM Cycling team.

“I am delighted to be here.  I’ve been on really good teams like Cervélo, but this team is even better in terms of atmosphere.  It is a great family that formed and I found my bearings very quickly.”

Wyss’ strong results such as his 2nd place in the GP de Cholet on March 17th, followed by a 18th and a 13th place in the Critérium International and Circuit de la Sarthe, respectively, have given him additional motivation and desire to succeed.

A talented racer from an early age having won a Swiss Junior National Championship 2004, Marcel Wyss very nearly ended his professional cycling career prematurely in spite of having finished an excellent 8th place in the 2010 Tour of Romandie.

Wyss turned to cycling because he was too light to play as a defender on the Swiss  SC Langnau Tigers soccer team, and frankly explains what nearly ended his cycling career:

“I am basically starting a whole new life.  Last year I raced only 30 days and trained for barely 20,000 kilometers total.  Already in 2013 I have close to 15,000 kilometers covered.  Really, in view of the 8 cm tumor that surgeons removed from my body between my ribs and my bowels, it is a miracle that I am able to do that at all.  Of course, I started from scratch at the end of last summer.  And I expect the best is yet to come.  I’m happy with my performances so far this season and I have room for improvement both for the Tour of Romandie and then for the Tour of Switzerland.”
